Details

Johnston's of Elgin Cheviot Tartan Rug - For over four centuries the rolling Cheviot Hills of the Scottish Borders have been home to Scotland's finest sheep. Originally husbanded by the monks and friars of the 16th century Border abbeys of Melrose, Kelso and Jedburgh, the south country Cheviots were extensively improved in the 18th century by crossing with Lincoln Longwool, Ryeland and even Merino to produce a breed that can still withstand the rigours of a cold, wet winter and yet produce a good soft fleece used in the tweed trade.

During this era the wool industry was the most important agricultural staple of the entire economy. These flocks still exsit today, and Johnston's have carefully selected the wool from this source to dye, spin and weave with this exclusive range of of tartan rugs, worthy of the name Cheviot.

This is truely a Scottish product.
